How to Stay Inspired even when You Aren’t

For every one moment of positivity and progress it feels like there are 3 negative moments or detractors of progress. It can be difficult to constantly stay optimistic and on your goals day to day.

Lately, as each day passes, I’ve felt further and further from my goals and I couldn’t understand why. I took some time to assess what the core feelings were and some possible solutions to stay inspired even though my tank is on empty.

As the new year starts, I want nothing more than to wipe the slate clean, but 2017 keeps tapping me in the shoulder asking me ‘wyd’ and why haven’t you done x, y, z?

I tend to suffer in silence, and not in an effort to be a martyr but because I understand and acknowledge that everyone is dealing with something. It’s that “eat all the food on your plate because there are people starving.” While that’s not a bad philosophy, it could use some work.

It’s ok to be sad, to feel lost, and to be overwhelmed. You’re not alone. By sharing your struggle with others you can learn valuable lessons about those around you and yourself.

In the face of opposition is when some of the best work is done. There’s something to be said about rising like a phoenix from the ashes of defeat and claiming victory.

How to stay inspired even when you aren’t

Do something fun

When you’re in a rut, or bummed out, do something you enjoy. Go to a movie, go for a walk with your tunes blaring, dance in your underwear. Do something for you, that makes you happy. It doesn’t have to be deep, it doesn’t have to be a crazy trip or experience.

Something simple and fun is all you need. It can be spontaneous, but do it for you. Purely for your own enjoyment. Doing something for yourself in the midst of a problem can inadvertently lead you to the solution you couldn’t see.

Re-assess your goals

Have you given yourself reasonable goals? Are you putting unnecessary pressure on yourself? Perhaps you have the habit of over committing or wanting to check everything off of your 236 item to-do list.

We do not live in a perfect world and it is difficult to maintain a healthy balance of optimism and inspiration. Are you setting these goals because you want to achieve them or because it’s what society says? Instead of dwelling on what you failed at, take a look at what you’ve accomplished.

Perspective. Is the glass half empty or half full? Remind yourself that while you may not be exactly you where you’d thought you’d be, you’re exactly where you ought to be.
